Mildred Cleo Scott, age 95 of Tualatin, OR, transitioned from her earthly home to her Heavenly home on April 17, 2025.
She was a native of Columbus, Mississippi; the fifth of seven children, and only daughter, born to Reverend Oscar D. Bryant, Sr. and Carrie W. Bryant. Mildred accepted Christ at an early age and continued her walk and service to the Lord until she was called home.
Mildred attended Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama from 1947-1951. On the campus of Tuskegee is where she met the love of her life, ROTC student and Building Construction major, Robert Lewis Scott. Mildred earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics. She also obtained teaching credentials in secondary education for the states of Mississippi and Alabama. She thereafter began her teaching career as a middle school teacher in Mississippi.
Mildred and Robert were married on December 23, 1951, and to this union four children were born. As an Army wife, Mildred traveled with Robert and their growing family, living overseas in Japan and various states around the country.
In 1961, the family settled in Los Angeles, California, where Mildred was very active with her children in both the community (Girl Scout Troop Leader) and the church (Youth Program Leader). Mildred had an amazing love for children and was always willing to spread her love to every child that crossed her path. Her love for children led her to open Scott's Daycare Center in her home, where she loved and nurtured babies 0-2 years old. She also became a foster mom to toddler and infant brothers. The boys were showered with her love and remained a part of her family after they were adopted.
Mildred dedicated her service to the Lord in many ways. She served as the Women's Ministries Coordinator at Fellowship Christian Community Church in Los Angeles, and had a deep passion for visiting the sick and shut-in at nursing facilities, hospitals, and homes. She taught Sunday School, sang soprano in the choir, and always had a song in her heart.
In 1989, Mildred and Robert moved to Columbus, Mississippi. She joined Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church and served with another visitation group for the sick and shut-in. Expanding her "gift of helps", Mildred joined the Hospital Auxiliary at the Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle as a volunteer, serving eleven years. Mildred had great leadership skills, a giving soul, and always found a kind word and a smile to brighten someone's day.
In 2005, Mildred and Robert moved to Conyers, Georgia, where she continued her life's work of serving God and enjoying life. Mildred joined the Turner Lake Senior Center in Newton County, Georgia, where she participated in the Red Hat Society, Gospel Line Dancers, Liturgical Dancers, Voices of Wisdom Choir, and many other activities offered by the center.
Mildred joined Springfield Baptist Church in Conyers, Georgia, and was an active member of the Disciples of Hope where she joined the choir and regularly attended Bible study. She also was a founding member of the Women of Favor Praise Dancers and loved participating in the Gospel Line Dancers group.
In Oregon, Mildred attended the Gentog (Generation Together) Community Services Center which offers day care for seniors and children. Mildred participated in all the activities offered from singing and dancing, to interacting with the children. She also participated in the by-monthly worship services offered on Sundays. Mildred loved attending the center and was an active participant until her health declined.
Mildred was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years - Robert Scott, Sr.; parents - Oscar Bryant, Sr. and Carrie Bryant; and six brothers - Oscar Bryant, Jr., Reuben Bryant, Lucious Bryant, Sr., Freddie Bryant, James Bryant, Sr., and Elbert Bryant, Sr.
