Mary Josephine Supalo (nee Matthews)
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on January 6, 1934 to Charles E Matthews and Myrtle M (McCormick) Matthews, Mary grew up in South Minneapolis near the Charles E Matthews Park and Community Center dedicated to her father. In 1957, Mary wed Neil John Supalo at Holy Rosary Church in South Minneapolis. Mary graduated in 1952 from South High School and after the death of her husband in 1978, graduated from the University of Minnesota General College with an AA degree in 1981. Mary went on to graduate from Lakeland Medical Academy after which she became a medical assistant, working at the Minneapolis Veterans Hospital until her retirement in 1996. Mary and Neil moved to Bloomington in 1962 where they raised their daughters Katherine M Whalen (Mrs. Andrew J Whalen) North Carolina and Susan M. Pommrehn (Mrs. Mark R Pommrehn) of MA and OR. Mary moved to Waxhaw, NC in 2005, and to Tigard, OR in 2019. Mary is survived by grandchildren Stephanie L Marshall (nee Pommrehn and Mrs. Matthew C Marshall) of East Sussex, England, Julia M Whalen and Branden J Whalen of NC; and three great-grandsons Leopold A Marshall and Edward G Marshall of England, and Julia's son Peter of NC, siblings: Charles E Matthews, Jr., Kathleen F Moran (Platzer), John F Matthews, all of the Twin Cities. Mary enjoyed figure skating, interior design, travel, and activities with high school friends known as the Kay Debs. Mary is the past Chaplin of the Jonathan Hatch Chapter of the Colonial Dames XVII Century in NC, member of the National Daughters of Union Veterans, and the Minnesota Territorial Pioneers. Internment will be alongside her husband at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minnesota. Memorials may be made to the Everett McClay VFW Post 1296 in Bloomington, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Patricia M Kosciolek.
