Norma Jean Cummins, daughter of Eddie K. and Delpha L. (Brown) Henriksen, was born in Fresno, CA, and moved to Palo Alto at age 2. She attended Palo Alto schools and San Jose State University where she earned a B.A. in education in June 1951. A week later she married Lyle in the Stanford U. chapel after dating for four years. With her beautiful soprano voice she soloed in churches in Palo Alto, Mill Valley, Indianapolis, Wilbraham, MA, and after moving to Lake Oswego in 1970, Lake Grove Presbyterian Church. There she was ordained an elder, chaired the church's new organ committee in the 1970s and later initiated its first building programs. Accompanying Lyle on his research travels meant numerous trips to Europe where she absorbed its history and culture. This led to an M.A. in European history at the University of Portland in 1983 where she became an adjunct professor mainly teaching western civilization and history of Austria. She helped initiate a six week summer program of for-credit courses at UP's winter school facility in Salzburg where she taught for two summers (Director the 1st year) and then two summers in a similar program in London. She was an inspiring teacher and mentor. After retiring from UP at age 73 she wrote and published a book on Elisabeth, the wife of Germany's Frederich the Great. She and Lyle moved to Charbonneau in Wilsonville in 1988. Encephalitis in 2013 led to a final illness and into memory care at SpringRidge Court. She passed away in her family's presence on June 20th. Jeanne is survived by her loving husband Clessie Lyle Cummins Jr. and children Diana J. Cummins, Altadena, CA, Karen A. Maxwell, Walla Walla, WA, Matthew L. Cummins and his wife Cheri L., West Linn, and four grandchildren. A memorial service at Lake Grove Church will be held at 2:00 on August 13th.
